Stories of Hope

Julia

After being treated for cancer and having to manage on disability payments of less than $600. a month, Julia was just starting to get back on her feet. The 61-year-old grandmother lived alone in a small, one bedroom apartment with the help of a Section 8 housing subsidy. Then her life was suddenly shaken up again. She was given permanent custody of her 13-year-old granddaughter.

Her landlord asked her to move because the regulations for her Section 8 subsidy require a separate bedroom for each child.  The local housing agency helped Julia find a larger apartment, told her how to apply for monthly assistance and food stamps to support her granddaughter. Julia applied for a grant from Family-to-Family for the security deposit.

Today the new family is stabilized in a safe apartment.
